Area Law Enforcement
Around fifty cars have been marked with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they reported in a official communication.
Officers say they were notified late on Wednesday night, when a man noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been covered with a reddish substance.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a banned symbol, they reported.
Law enforcement then found multiple other marked vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
These symbols are prohibited in Germany under laws outlawing the public display of Nazi-era symbols.
Police report initial examinations suggest the fluid was most likely human blood.
"There is still no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any harm in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities stated they were attempting "to resolve the case" and have requested to the community for tips.
A high-ranking official commented the attack rendered him stunned and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reopens the trauma of the far-right violent incident half a decade ago," he wrote on a platform, mentioning the death of nine people by a assailant targeting individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
