The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type May Address This Issue

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always an outcry for the addition fresh award types to recognize underappreciated efforts and fill the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. It's understandable that movie academies avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, fast-paced pattern recognition of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category that year
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • Popular arranging title received no acknowledgment in 2021
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often small games, but the art of the puzzle game carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles globally and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals well-known building titles claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. You could fill a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
