From Acclaim to Rage: Right-wing Reaction to Epstein File Disclosure is Divided.

Conservative responses to the limited disclosure of files involving the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in photographs, while others lamented how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a unfavorable light.

Justice Department Defends Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric

Justice Department representatives justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Justice Department been this transparent with the public about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” declared Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who issued a detailed letter outlining the redaction procedure.

Questions Prompted by Redactions

While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the materials, the extensive black blocks prompt serious questions about the information may be hidden beneath them. Some Republicans swiftly called for increased openness.

“People are furious and disengaging,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.

In a online statement, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship break the law, and implied that a future legislature may move to impeach the Attorney General, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the act,” he continued.

Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Release

But, some conservative commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the Justice Department's actions.

The release—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely censored, and numerous of the individuals shown in photographs have their faces blacked out.

Yet some do not, including high-profile figures like Bill Clinton, pop singer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The presence of the former president, in particular, allowed some rightwing figures to launch the attack.

“It’s pretty rich how the Democrats wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a sex offender, only for the administration's Justice Department to release documents that show Bill Clinton swimming nude with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing activist Laura Loomer.

“New Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a female that is other than his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There is only one explanation Epstein would photograph a US President with a young woman in a hot tub: Leverage.”

Clinton Campaign Issues Statement

Clinton has repeatedly said he was aware of zero illegal actions by Epstein and has never been accused to have engaged in any wrongdoing. “The administration has not been concealing those documents for an extended period only to release them late on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” his spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.

“The release is about shielding officials from what comes next, or from information they will try and hide forever. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy 20-plus-year-old photographs as they desire, but this isn’t about Bill Clinton. Not previously, never will be,” the response added.

Overall Conservative Comment Seems Muted

Nonetheless, overall discourse on the political right was relatively muted following the disclosure, especially when compared with the vociferous calls for action that preceded the congressional approval to enact a law mandating the documents' release.

Loomer, who recently secured media access at the Defense Department, had been one of the most vocal proponents for a full release. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative personalities were given hard-copy binders of files that contained no previously unseen data.
