The US monetary authority reduced interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with ongoing price increases.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of positions created to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.
Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to publish last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release once the closure started. Private payroll firm ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still released its inflation report for September that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Prices increased three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
